The benefits of this grant for women : The Capstone Editing

Capstone Editing aims to assist because women are still underrepresented in higher academic positions despite their strong presence at the undergraduate and master’s levels. This is due to the competitive nature of the academic world, which disproportionately affects women’s decision to pursue an academic career and their progression within it, known as the « pipeline effect ».

Academic workload can often be excessive, with unrealistic expectations for research results and unpaid overtime, causing many academics to work more than 40 hours a week, and some even up to 80 hours a week. This workload can be particularly difficult for women academics due to social expectations and structural factors that lead them to take on greater responsibilities for parenting and caregiving. Despite some progress in recognizing the impact of family responsibilities on academic work, there is a systemic failure to fully acknowledge how caregiving, especially motherhood, can significantly affect the careers of women academics. Overall, greater awareness and support are needed to address the challenges faced by women in academia with regards to family responsibilities.
